Suspect in Dayton police pursuit indicted on multiple felonies

DAYTON — UPDATE SEPT. 4 @ 5:05 p.m.:

Bond was set for a man accused of leading Dayton police on a 22-minute chase Aug. 20.

A $25,000 surety bond with conditional own recognizance was set for Alvin Thompson Jr. in the Montgomery County Common Pleas Court Tuesday.

UPDATE AUG. 29 @ 4:23 p.m.:

A Dayton man was indicted on multiple felony counts Wednesday for an Aug. 20 incident where the suspect led police on a 22-minute pursuit and dropped a baby while trying to flee.

Alvin Thompson Jr., 25, was indicted by a Montgomery County jury on one count each of:

  • Carrying concealed weapons
  • Endangering children
  • Improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle
  • Failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer
  • Having weapons while under disability — prior drug conviction
  • Having weapons while under disability — prior offence of violence

On Aug. 20, police attempted to conduct a traffic stop when Thompson drove off, according to a press release from the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office.

Thompson exited the vehicle with an infant and took off on foot after officers deployed stop-sticks. While attempting to flee, Thompson stumbled, dropping the infant.

Officers were able to take Thompson into custody and reportedly found a handgun in his pocket.

Thompson was previously convicted of robbery, trafficking in marijuana, trafficking in drugs and possession of cocaine.

He is being held in the Montgomery County Jail on a $25,000 bond, according to the release.

Thompson’s arraignment is scheduled for Sept. 4 at 8:30 a.m.

UPDATE AUG. 20 @ 6 p.m.:

The suspect in a 22-minute police pursuit got out of his car and ran with a 7-week-old baby in his arms; he then dropped the baby while trying to jump a fence behind the 4100 block of Free Pike, Dayton police said.

The baby fell to the ground, striking a metal pipe. At last check the infant was in stable condition at Dayton Children’s Hospital.

The suspect was identified as 25-year-old Alvin E. Thompson Jr. He was arrested following a pursuit and was booked into the Montgomery County Jail on suspicion of felonious assault; failure to comply with an order or signal of a police officer; and on a traffic warrant. A semi-automatic firearm was found in his possession, police said.

An officer around 12:40 p.m. saw a vehicle in the 500 block of Salem Avenue and attempted to make a traffic stop, however, the vehicle fled. Based on two prior attempts over the past 10 days by Dayton officers to stop this driver, and his history of being involved in drug and gun crimes, multiple Dayton crews engaged in a pursuit. The pursuit lasted 22 minutes and ended when an officer deployed a tire deflation device, police said.

That’s when Thompson got out of the car with the baby, when the baby was injured as he tried to jump the fence.

Thompson is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in Dayton Municipal Court.

UPDATE @ 1:50 p.m.: 

An infant was transported to Dayton Children’s Hospital after they suffered injuries in the aftermath of a police pursuit that ended on Free Pike in Dayton.

Officers began pursuing a vehicle before 1 p.m., following a reported robbery at a home on Grove Avenue. Investigators now say they are not sure if the vehicle and driver were involved in the reported robbery.

The pursuit ended around 1:15 p.m. in the area of Free Pike and North Gettysburg Avenue. The driver exited the vehicle carrying the infant, according to police and initial reports.

The man was taken into custody and a medic was requested for the infant who suffered injuries during the incident.

The infant was transported to the hospital for precautionary reasons and is expected to be ok, according to police.

Officials said it is still under investigation if the man in custody is the infant’s father or if he has any relation to the child.

It is not known what charges the man might face.

UPDATE @ 1:15 p.m.:

One person has been taken into custody on Free Pike in Dayton after a police pursuit ended, according to police scanner traffic.

Officers began pursuing the vehicle after a reported robbery at a home on Grove Avenue in Dayton around 1 p.m.

Initial reports indicate the pursuit ended in a crash near the intersection of Free Pike and North Gettysburg Avenue around 1:10 p.m.

One person exited the vehicle and was holding an infant, before they were taken into custody, according to scanner traffic.

The infant has reportedly been injured and medics have been requested to the scene.
