Officers were dispatched to a two-vehicle head-on crash in the 5900 block of Germantown Pike (State Route 4) at approximately 7:02 p.m., according to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

Initial investigations tell us a 2014 Chevy Traverse was traveling south on Germantown Pike when it struck a 2000 Chevy Suburban head-on.

There were eight people on board the Chevy suburban, including seven children between the ages of seven and 14.

“The driver of the Chevy suburban was pronounced dead at the scene,” said Major Jeremy Roy, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. “One of the kids was pronounced dead at the scene, one child was pronounced deceased at Children’s Hospital.”

Two other children are in serious to critical condition and three others were treated and released from Children’s. There were all part of one extended family, according to Roy.

“The driver of the Chevy Traverse suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries,” Roy said.

Investigators at the scene have probable cause that alcohol was a contributing factor in this crash and the suspect remains in the hospital under the supervision of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputies.

A search warrant has been executed for urinal and blood samples and the sheriff’s office is awaiting those results, according to Roy.

“I feel horrible for their family,” he said. “I feel bad for the doctors who are doing everything they can to save those kids.”

The names and ages of the people who died have not yet been released.

This crash remains under investigation by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.
