PIQUA — UPDATE: 11:45 a.m.
A suspect who fled the scene of an accident was later involved in a second crash that sent them and another driver to the hospital, Piqua police say.
Officers were dispatched to a report of an accident involving a black pickup truck that had struck a business on U.S. 36 near downtown, according to Piqua police Deputy Chief Marty Grove
The pickup truck was seen leaving the scene and would not stop for officers, Grove said.
This initiated a short, slow speed pursuit and the pickup truck then increased its speed as it was heading westbound on High Street.
Police terminated the pursuit and a short time later the black pickup truck went through a red light at Sunset Drive and High Street and struck a southbound UPS truck, which caused it to flip around an eastbound vehicle that was stopped at the red light, Grove said. This vehicle was also struck.
The UPS driver was trapped for a while and had to be extricated but did not suffer any injures, according to Grove.
The driver of the black pickup truck was also trapped and had to be cut out of his vehicle, Grove said. He was transported to UPMC with injuries that do not appear life-threatening.
The driver of the third vehicle was transported to the hospital for possible minor injuries.
Grove says it is undetermined at this time what charges the pickup driver will be facing, but charges will be coming.
