UPDATE: Officer injured, suspect dead after shooting at Columbus shopping plaza

COLUMBUS — UPDATE 11:19 a.m.:

A Columbus police officer was injured in a shooting between police and a suspect in Columbus Wednesday morning.

The shooting happened around 6:50 a.m. in a shopping plaza in south Columbus where officers were responding to a robbery call, according to our news partners at WBNS in Columbus.

Columbus Police Sgt. Joseph Albert said the initial report was that a man with a firearm was robbing a person in the parking lot.

When officers arrived on the scene, gunfire was immediately exchanged between the suspect and multiple officers, according to Albert. An officer and the suspect were both hit at least once.

The officer and suspect were taken to Grant Medical Center. The suspect died from their injuries just after 7:20 a.m., WBNS reported.

The officer was in critical condition, but his condition has since improved.

Albert told WBNS that multiple firearms were found at the scene. He added that a person was arrested on scene, but their involvement in the incident is unknown at this time.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting.
