Officer dies after being shot in Ohio; suspect charged

CLEVELAND — UPDATE @ 11:43 a.m.:

The man accused of shooting and killing a Cleveland police officer has been charged.

The man, identified as Delawnte Hardy, has been charged with aggravated murder, according to WOIO. He’s in custody at the Cuyahoga County Justice Center.

A police officer has died after being shot in Ohio early Thursday morning.

Cleveland Police Chief Dorothy Todd said in a news conference that the 27-year-old officer was shot in the 1500 block of E. 80th Street, according to CBS affiliate WOIO.

“This is a really tough situation, and it’s hitting everyone really hard,” Chief Todd told Cleveland Media Outlets.

Several officers responded to the area to serve a warrant to a wanted man for felonious assault.

When they arrived, the suspect was leaving home on a bicycle and the suspect fired shots hitting the officer, according to Chief Todd.

The officer’s name has not been released and was with the department for four year.

A 24-year-old man is in custody, WOIO reports.

A Cleveland police officer was shot on the city’s east side, according to CBS affiliate WOIO.

Officers have been on the scene since 1 a.m. at the 1500 block of E. 80th Street since around 1 a.m.

It is in the city’s Hough neighborhood, WOIO said.

Cleveland EMS confirms to Cleveland media outlets that at least one other person is hospitalized.

There is no word on the officer’s condition, WKYC TV reports.

A news conference is scheduled for later this morning.
