Mail from drop box at Kettering post office stolen Saturday; Investigation ongoing

KETTERING — Kettering Police Department responded to the U.S. Postal Service office on Forrer Boulevard after reports of theft Sunday afternoon.

A sergeant with Kettering PD said crews responded around 3:25 p.m. to reports of theft from the boxes outside of the post office.

WHIO spoke with U.S. Postal Inspector Ed Trejo on Monday. He said the theft happened at a collection box and at this time, it is unknown how much mail was stolen.

“It’s an ongoing crime that happens,” Trejo said. “There is no set pattern.”

Police described the suspect as a man in a white hoodie and a white SUV.

The incident remains under investigation by the United State Postal Inspection Service.

If found, Trejo said, the person responsible would face federal charges. He said the typical sentence for these cases is 2-5 years, but added that it could be much higher for this case. It will depend factors such as the amount of mail stolen and the number of victims.

Trejo said anyone who suspects they may have had their mail stolen can file a report online at www.uspis.gov or by calling 877-876-2455.
