UPDATE: Man shot, killed on Lexington Avenue in Dayton identified, suspect in custody

DAYTON — A man who was shot in the area of Salem and Lexington avenues in Dayton Tuesday afternoon has died, according to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office.

The shooting happened in the first block of Lexington around 5:15 p.m.

Daniel Burch, 30, of Dayton, was taken to Miami Valley Hospital, where he later died, said Montgomery County Coroner Kent Harshbarger.

According to Dayton Police, citizens approached crews as they were beginning to clear from a scene involving a wanted individual on the roof on 1219 Superior Avenue. They reported an individual accosting a person with a handgun near the intersection of Salem and Lexington Avenues.

The armed individual was reported to have taken the unarmed person, Burch, into the alley east of Lexington Avenue. The citizens reported hearing several shots.

Upon arrival, an adult male suspect ran from officers, dropping a handgun as he fled the scene.

Burch was located by police in the backyard of a nearby vacant property. He was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Police were able to catch the suspect and take him into custody. He was transported to the Safety Building, interviewed by Homicide detectives and booked into the Montgomery County Jail on a preliminary charge of Murder.
