Wanted man taken into custody after hours-long standoff in Dayton

DAYTON — A wanted man was taken into custody by law enforcement after an hours-long standoff in Dayton Thursday morning.

Officers took Charles Vititoe into custody after the standoff on S. Irwin Street.

Dayton police and officers from the Southern Ohio Fugitive Task Force were out around 7 a.m. looking for Vititoe, according to Maj. Christopher Molson, Dayton Police Incident Commander.

Officers tracked Vititoe’s location to S. Irwin Street.

“When they went to take him into custody, he ran inside a residence and barricaded himself inside,” Molson said.

Vititoe had been staying at the house he ran into. Two of his known acquaintances were inside at the time of the incident, but Molson said they were not the target of the investigation.

After several violent threats were made, police called in Dayton SWAT and a hostage negation team. Law enforcement was able to convince Vititoe to come out of the home just before 11:40 a.m. and he was taken into custody.

Molson said he was wanted and had some warrants out for his arrest, but he did not go into specifics regarding what the warrants were for.

Vititoe was booked in the Montgomery County Jail Thursday afternoon on a parole violation and charges of kidnapping, inducing panic and obstructing official business. Online jail records show that he’s scheduled to appear in court Friday afternoon.
