DAYTON — Two people are in custody with one facing drugs and weapons charges after a SWAT team and Dayton police served a search warrant at a Vernon Drive home.

Corey J. Smith is facing preliminary possession of drugs and having weapons while under disability charges, according to the Miami Valley Jails site.

We are working to learn if the second person taken into custody is facing any charges.

Police swarmed a home in the 1100 block of Vernon Drive this morning to serve a search warrant.

SWAT assisted due to the situation being high risk. Though unconfirmed in this instance, high risk search warrants include there being rifles, or something of similar danger inside the home, officials say.

Tear gas was deployed as the responding officers and SWAT forced their way into the home.

Paul Pettus, who has lived in his Vernon Drive home for 13 years, said he knew something was unusual when he woke up.

“I looked out the window and police was surrounding the neighborhood.”

Police said about 20 minutes after using the tear gas,  Smith and a second person were detained.

In addition to authorities, the Montgomery County Animal Resource Center and EMS responded to the scene.

Pettus said the neighborhood has become infiltrated with drugs.

“We have older people who live here in the community and a lot of them don’t feel safe walking to the store and back.”

In addition to asking officers to patrol the area more, Pettus hopes the incident this morning deters crime in the future.

“We’re kind of glad to seep police enforcement being applied to the community, because everybody that live over here isn’t in compliance with each other,” he said.
