GERMAN TWP., Clark County — Police are warning businesses and citizens after counterfeit $1 bills were used to pay for items at a Clark County business this week.

The German Twp. business reported finding the fake bills while counting a till earlier in the week.
German Twp. Police Officer Amy Mosier said while cases of fake currency are not uncommon, cases of fake $1 bills are rare.

“I haven’t come across (fake) $1 bills. I’ve come across larger bills, but $1 bills, I haven’t come across (before),” Mosier said in an interview with News Center 7’s Katy Anderson.
Mosier added that most businesses are not looking for fake $1 bills, especially when several are being used at one time.
The counterfeit bills are very similar to real cash; identical in size and very similar in texture, but have several differences that are not easy to see.
“Most of (the differences) are in fine print and are very hard to see,” Mosier said.
The bills passed at the German Twp. business have multiple markings indicating “Motion Picture Purposes” and says “Hollywood, CA” on the right side of the bill, instead of Washington D.C.
With businesses conducting more transactions during the holiday season, Mosier advised everyone to always check the bills and look at the details to make sure the cash is real.
German Twp. police continue their investigation and could pursue charges of theft by deception or additional charges if a suspect is identified, Mosier said.
We are starting to get reports of counterfeit one dollar bills at local businesses. Please check the money closely before accepting it.
