CLEVELAND — An Ohio police department has issued a warning about fake social media posts that claim three officers were killed.

The Cleveland Division of Police addressed the issue on its Facebook page Sunday.

They said recent posts have made the rounds on social media about fugitives with similar messages with different photos and names.

The post falsely claims that a “serial killer” couple was on the run after killing three female officers.

The department reminded people that law enforcement agencies would make announcements on traditional media outlets or their social media platforms.

They offered these tips:

  • If you see a message from unverified sources, please consider sharing only if the information has been verified.
  • Look for clues that this may be false, the murder of 3 female officers would be a significant event.
  • Look for references to credible sources.
