COLUMBUS — Several law enforcement agencies responded to a “security incident” at Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose’s suburban Columbus home late Sunday night.

A spokesperson from the Secretary of State’s office said the LaRose received and opened mail at his home containing a “powdery substance and written material of a threatening nature.”

LaRose notified his security staff and took action to protect his family from any immediate harm after opening the letter.
“At the request of local authorities, multiple local, state and federal law enforcement agents responded to the Secretary’s home, including hazmat and bomb detection units. The suspicious materials were collected for further investigation, and the Secretary and his family are safe. The incident remains under active investigation,” the spokesperson said.
There has been an increased security presence at LaRose’s home in recent months due to “numerous personal threats of physical harm.”
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine requested that the Department of Public Safety and the Ohio State Highway Patrol provide security consultation and personal protective services in the weeks before the presidential election.
