News Center 7′s Malik Patterson spoke with people about why they showed up at Herbert C. Huber Community Park.
Over a dozen people attended the vigil. They said they remain shaken about what happened on Dec. 4.
“We felt this was something that had to be addressed,” said Cindy Davidson, Director of Huber Heights Community Cares.
She organized the vigil after the city’s Christmas parade on Saturday afternoon.
They wanted to make sure it was held.
“Could not, in any way, get away from what had really happened here a few days ago. That was a tragedy in our city,” said Davidson.
>>PREVIOUS COVERAGE: Teen girl stabbed at local park in stable condition
As previously reported by News Center 7, Huber Heights police and medics were called to Herbert C. Huber Community Park for reports of a stabbing around 1 p.m. on Wednesday.
It started with a fight between two girls when one of the girls was stabbed, according to Sgt. Josh Fosnight.
Video circulation on social media showed the fight between the two girls near one of the park’s gazebos.
The girl was taken to Dayton Children’s Hospital in suspected critical condition, according to Fosnight. The Huber Heights Police Department says she is now stable.
The suspect was taken into custody in a neighborhood behind the park.
“It’s heartbreaking just to know these young girls, life will forever be changed, and their families, life will be changed also,” said Shannon Teague.
She told Patterson her daughter had class with the victim.
Davidson was happy when she found out the victim was in stable condition.
“There’s a lot of healing mentally that’s going to go on with students and her and even the young girl that stabbed her, but we do believe it could have been worse.”
Davidson said they also prayed for all students before the school year started.
They wanted both families to know they were there to support them.
“We are bigger than that. We’re better than that,” she said.
Huber Heights Community Care said their next big event is in the spring for student suicide prevention.
The goal is to bring all students together.
