Michael Fauber, 18, was shot multiple times at a church near Birmingham, Alabama Dec. 3 and has been hospitalized since the shooting.

In a statement released by a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and spokesperson Fauber’s parents, David and Rachel Fauber said they’ve been “overwhelmed with the love and support” in the days after the shooting.

“We are seeing progress and improvement every day in our son’s condition as he continues what will be a long recovery. We expect he will remain hospitalized for several more days,” David and Rachel said in the joint statement.

“He is aware of the many prayers being offered on his behalf and sends his appreciation. Michael has loved his missionary service and loves the people of Alabama.”

Fauber is a 2021 graduate of Beavercreek High School, according to the church spokesperson.

Michael was shot at the Alabama Birmingham Mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints while a basketball game was going on inside the cultural center. The church spokesperson said an unknown individual came into the building and shot Michael multiple times before fleeing the scene.

Investigators said the shooting appeared to be “unprovoked” and they were still looking for the shooter. A spokesperson for the Jefferson County, Alabama Sheriff’s Office said the incident remains under investigation and no new details were available for release.
