TROY — The renters of a home in Troy where over 30 dogs were rescued said they should not be evicted and asked for $25,000 from their landlord.
Tuesday afternoon The Miami County Animal Control removed 32 dogs from a home in the 500 block of Union Street.
The property’s owner Evan Brumbaugh previously told News Center 7 that he was working to evict the renters and that the house is condemned.
Court documents filed in the Miami County Municipal Court Wednesday outline reasons why the renters believe they should not be evicted from their home.
The renters are described in the document as “hard-working people struggling.”
Court documents also allege that “everything was good” until Brumbaugh’s father Lloyd died and Evan took over.
The renters claim they were given no choice but to sign a new agreement with Evan that they did not understand.
“The defendants have been totally confused and under incredible emotional distress,” the documents state.
One renter said she believes her health problems have become serious due to the “unconscionable acts and failures” of Evan.
The condition of the home was said to be a result people living in the home previously, not the current renters.
The renters asked for a minimum of $25,000 in the eviction counterclaim from Evan.
The documents further allege that Evan breached contract, violated the Ohio Landord-Tenant Act, and refused to accept Lloyd’s contracts with the renters.
