Officers were called to the 300 block of Lorenz Avenue around 11 p.m. Tuesday on reports of a weapons complaint and disturbance. Callers reported multiple people were in the street and believed someone had a weapon, Dayton Police Major Jason Hall told News Center 7.
When officers arrived at the scene multiple people ran, including a man who was observed by police as having a weapon. The suspected armed man ran into a house on Lorenz Avenue, which prompted police to surround the house and create a perimeter.
While police were checking the perimeter of the house, a shot was fired from inside the house in the direction of an officer, Hall said.
“One of the officers as he’s walking around the side of the house heard a very loud gunshot, saw a flash, and could actually smell burnt gunpowder. The shot was fired from within the structure and was loud enough for the officer to temporarily lose hearing,” Hall said.
Officers called for backup, issuing a countywide officer-assistance call. The suspected shooter was later taken into custody after he walked out of the house, Hall said.
Walvid Marquis Dubose, 40, was the man arrested and housed in the jail after the incident, according to a Dayton police incident report. Dubose is facing preliminary charges of felonious assault, having weapons while under disability, improper discharge of a firearm, and obstructing official business, online jail records show.
The officer was not injured, Hall said.
“Very scary situation for the officers involved, to have a round go off that close,” Hall said.
Additional details were not released.
