Richmond Toxic Fire: Richmond Community Schools announce no classes for Monday

RICHMOND — Richmond Community Schools has canceled school district-wide Monday following the fire at a plastics manufacturing company last week.

The city lifted the evacuation order at a news conference on Sunday.

The district announced the closure on social media Sunday afternoon in a continued effort to work collaboratively with federal, state and local officials.

“We feel it is in our best interest to err on the side of caution as we want to insure our buildings are safe for our students and staff,” the school said.

The school district said they are working in partnership with air quality control vendors in an attempt to return to in-person learning as soon as possible and confident their air filters caught any matter produced from the fire.

The EPA has been at their campuses inspecting and removing debris on the exterior of their schools.

The school district says it continues to work with the Wayne County Emergency Manage Agency and Indiana Department of Environmental Management with the cleanup, the school district said.

All extracurricular activities on Richmond Community School grounds have also been canceled for Monday.

The district canceled all after school activities Tuesday and canceled all classes Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Ivy Tech Community College announced Sunday night in-person classes and activities will resume Monday now that the evacuation order has been lifted.
