Richmond School Shooting: Active shooter training saved lives, police say

RICHMOND, Ind. — Indiana State Police said an intended shooting at Dennis Intermediate School was likely prevented by past training for active shooter scenarios.

Brandon Clegg, 14, who intended to shoot up the school in Richmond, Ind., used a gun to commit suicide Thursday morning, but no other students were injured, according to ISP.

Indiana State Police trains at least once a year on handling active shooters, according to an ISP spokesperson. The same training is utilized by Richmond Police and Wayne County authorities so that all parties can work in unison when situations like these arise.

Schools, churches and businesses can schedule presentations from ISP on how to handle active shooter situations on the ISP website.

The site has several slideshows, videos and guidelines “to assist educators in preparing to respond to the unpredictable possibility of an active shooter event,” according to ISP.

The guidelines list step-by-step processes for developing plans and reuniting victims with their loved ones.
