News Center 7 previously reported that after 12:20 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon, Greenville police and fire were called to the intersection of State Route 571 near SR 49 and the Shell gas station on reports of a train derailment.
Police say that the train was coming from an ethanol plant in Greenville when cars fully loaded with ethanol jumped from the tracks. There were no leaks.
Dispatchers confirmed that State Route 571 near State Route 49 reopened around 2 a.m.
News Center 7′s Xavier Hershovitz provided a live update from the scene during News Center 7′s Daybreak.
When he arrived, fire crews had left the scene.
Hershovitz said more cleanup needs to be done following Tuesday’s train derailment.
He noticed some railroad track was mangled at the derailment site.
The Greenville Fire Department provided an update on social media early Wednesday morning.
They said that R.J. Croman had “mitigated the train derailment without further incident.”
“Crews from R.J. Corman will return after sunrise to make repairs to the track,” the department said. “It is unknown at this time if the roadway will need to be closed again while they make needed repairs. Please use caution if traveling through the area or plan an alternate route.”
