WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE — Wright-Patterson Air Force Base personnel are investigating after a Rumpke driver died while working in the Prairies Housing Complex near the base Tuesday, a base spokeswoman said.

First responders responded to the area of Gross Drive at 7 a.m. after a man was found unconscious in the road.

“It was discovered that the individual was a trash collection driver and the truck he was operating was found unoccupied further down the road where it had damaged two privately owned vehicles,” base officials said. “Wright-Patterson officials determined the individual had exited the truck while in motion for reasons unknown and was subsequently struck by the truck.”

The driver was taken by base medical personnel to Soin Medical Center, where he died.

“Rumpke is committed to working hand-in-hand with Wright Patterson and investigators to gather all the details,” a Rumpke spokesperson said.

The Greene County Coroner’s Office is investigating the cause and manner of the worker’s death, however his name was not available Thursday.

“Anytime a team member passes it’s like losing a member of our family. Our hearts break for our team member, his family and anyone else touched by this situation,” Rumpke said in a statement.
