Paul Otten, superintendent of Beavercreek City Schools, said although his students won’t be in school on Monday, his focus is the aftermath of the winter storm.
“This storm is one of those that creates some uneasiness for us as a school district,” Otten said.
He said there are “several” things he looks at when deciding to cancel school.
“Roads will be our top priority and our parking lots, because one of the things we have to focus on is making sure that our parking lots are ready for kids, for our staff and for our families dropping their kids off,” Otten said.
He said he has to have a decision for the school day by 5:30 a.m., but he may have it earlier for this storm.
“We will obviously monitor Sunday night and any opportunity that we have to notify parents the night before, we will do that,” Otten said.
For school buses, Otten said they get over snow pretty easily but run into problems with ice.
If school is not canceled, he said parents should have their students at the bus stop before the bus gets there.
“We don’t want them running to the bus. Our greatest fear is it’s dark, kids running on the bus are trying to get through the snow and they slip,” Otten said.
