RICHMOND — A man driving a scooter was killed in a crash after a woman said she didn’t see him, according to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.

Charles Stephenson, 46, of Richmond, was driving his scooter south on U.S. 27 South when another driver crashed into the back of him around 6 p.m. Tuesday.

The other driver, Ila Smith, 27, of Winchester, also was driving south when she was accused of hitting Stephenson and his scooter, deputies said.

“Smith stated that she did not see the scooter prior to the collision,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “A witness indicated that the lights on the scooter appeared to be functioning just prior to the crash.”

Stephenson was taken to Reid Health Hospital, where he ended up dying from his injuries.

Deputies have not said if there will be any charges for the crash, but they did say that there was no indication that Smith was impaired.
