Second local city issues temporary ban on new gas stations, convenience stores

KETTERING — No new gas stations or convenience stores in one Miami Valley city.

As reported on News Center 7 at 5:30, Kettering officials enacted a 16-month freeze on any new gas stations or convenience stores.

Kettering City Manager Matt Greeson said the pause gives city officials time to catch up and re-evaluate certain policies.

“The first step is to update the comprehensive plan, the future land use plan. The second step will be to actually update the laws,” Greeson said.

One long-time Kettering resident said he’s on board with the freeze.

“We have too many gas stations. There’s one on every corner,” he said.

There are at least 20 gas stations in Kettering, according to our unofficial count.

The residents said they want the city to focus on different types of businesses.

“We don’t need more fast food places ... if you’re going to invest, go big. Factories are good,” he said.

Which is what Kettering said they are trying to do.

Greeson said they are focused on revitalizing the Kettering Business Park and the Miami Valley Research Park.

“Our strategic plan, which we really recently adopted, has a core focus on, economic development, economic opportunity in our community,” he said.
