NEAR NEW WESTON, Darke County — UPDATE @ 11 p.m.: State Route 705 has reopened after being closed more than nine hours following the crash of a semitrailer hauling an estimated 40,000 pounds of egg that occurred when the driver failed to negotiate a curve, the Darke County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies, along with North Star Fire and Ansonia Rescue, were dispatched to state Route 705 near Coates Road in the “S” curve about 1:42 p.m. on the report of a semitrailer rollover crash with possible injuries. The road reopened about 10:35 p.m., according to sheriff’s dispatch.

Deputies on scene told News Center 7 the semi was hauling around 40,000 pounds of eggs. The preliminary investigation revealed that Gurdeep Singh, 27, of Greenwood, Indiana, was headed east on 705 when he failed to negotiate the curve. The big rig rolled onto the right side of the road.

Singh was not injured, the sheriff’s office said.

Tow truck workers had not been able to right the big rig because they were waiting to determine whether the eggs could be saved.

“Eggs are technically a hazardous material once they come out of the trailer or spill on the ground,” Lonnie Saunders, a tow truck driver on scene, said. “Lot of people don’t know that, so you gotta be careful when you’re handling them.”

At 10 p.m., cleanup workers were continuing to remove as many eggs as they could before the semitrailer could be safely removed.

We will continue updating this report as warranted.
