UPDATE @ 12:18 a.m. (Jan. 16): The barn fire off National Road (U.S. 40) in Clayton has been put out. Now the investigation begins to determine the cause, Clayton Fire Chief Brian Garver said.
Crews from Brookville, Englewood and Union assisted Clayton in extinguishing flames they found on the first floor of the two-story barn in about 30 minutes, he said.
An unknown number of cats were removed safely. Equipment on the second floor also was removed from the barn that was full of hay and timber, Chief Garver said. There were no injuries.
The owner saw the flames early and notified the fire department right away, Garver said, and that was fortunate.
Had the owner gone to bed, Garver said, the outcome would have been different.
He estimated the damage at $10,000 or less.
