The Miami Valley is getting to the time of year where severe weather becomes more of a possibility with each passing weather system. Come Wednesday night into early Thursday, the Miami Valley will have at least a chance at a few strong to severe storms.
The Storm Prediction Center is indicating a level 2 out of 5 risk for severe storms over the Miami Valley Wednesday into Wednesday night. A level 2/5 risk means that scattered severe storms are a possibility.
What we are watching:
A cold front will pass through the Miami Valley during the early morning hours of Thursday. In advance of the cold front on Wednesday, showers and non-severe thunderstorms will be possible. The timeframe we are concerned about will be from 9 p.m. Wednesday until 1 a.m. Thursday.
An earlier arrival means the storms will likely be stronger.
When looking at severe storm potential, both wind shear and instability need to be present. The way things stand now, instability looks to be the limiting factor with this system.
Still, there will be wind shear present overnight Wednesday. If we get an overlap of what is left of the instability, along with the wind shear, then a few severe storms may maintain their strength as they move into the Miami Valley. A line of severe storms looks possible which could bring damaging winds up to 60mph and possibly a tornado or two.
The best timing and ingredients still look to set up to our west in Indiana but it will be important to monitor that development as we head into Wednesday evening.
What to do:
Stay tuned into the forecast Wednesday. Each round of rain we see will impact the ingredients left over for the next one. If or when severe weather alerts are issued, your Storm Center 7 team will be on WHIO TV, WHIO Radio 95.7FM, and our WHIO.com LIVE Stream.
