KETTERING — A 9-year-old girl sprang into action, potentially saving the life of her grandmother injured in a fall over the weekend.
“She’s my hero. She saved my life,” Trudy Jarrett said of her granddaughter Avriauna Taylor.
News Center 7's James Rider sat down with the woman and her granddaughter.
Around 1:30 a.m. Sunday, Jarrett said she got light-headed from not having enough oxygen. She fell, striking her head on the stove on the way down.
“I was just trying to sleep and I heard a humongous thud,” Avriauna said.
“If she hadn’t been there, I would have bled to death and died. There was that much blood,” 78-year-old Jarrett said.
“At first I thought it wasn’t real. A second later, it was real,” Avriauna said.
That’s when she ran to get help. She was barefoot and afraid of the dark, but knocked on neighboring doors hoping to wake someone to call 911.
“It’s my nana. I’m not afraid of anything when it comes to my nana,” she said.
Jarrett said another member of the family recently died in a similar way so she was even more concerned for her life.
“That’s what was going through my head, ‘oh, God, please don’t let me die now,’” Jarrett said.
The family said Avriauna is at her grandmother’s house every day, and when she’s not in school she sleeps there and even does a lot to help take care of her grandmother.
“I don’t know what I would do without her,” Jarrett said.
She is back home now, and her young granddaughter has resumed helping taking care of her just like before.
“I was worried about my nana because I love her a lot,” Avriauna said.
