Sheriff investigating reported altercation involving umpire, baseball official

The Clark County Sheriff's Office is investigating an allegation that an adult youth baseball official shoved a 17-year-old umpire to the ground during an apparent argument or disagreement Monday night at a game played in Springfield Twp.

Deputies were dispatched to the baseball field at Possum Elementary School, on West Possum Road, just before 9 p.m. on a report that an umpire had been assaulted by an adult. The umpire reportedly hit his head in the fall, according to the dispatch from the sheriff's office.

Sheriff's Sgt. Chad Brown said some witnesses told deputies the adult pushed the teenager to the ground, while others told authorities the umpire was backing away from the adult and tripped or stumbled over an object on the ground.

The umpire told deputies he was OK and did not require a trip to a hospital, Brown said. The adult identified herself as a youth baseball association official.

Brown said the teams were not affiliated with the school and that the players were middle-school age.

The sergeant said several witnesses needed to be interviewed before any determination is made about whether to pursue a criminal charge.

Neither the baseball official nor the umpire wanted to talk with News Center 7 about what happened.
