Sheriff’s office identifies man killed in Champaign County crash

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY — A Mechanicsburg man was identified Friday as the victim of a crash involving semi in Champaign County Wednesday.

Around 9:30 a.m., deputies were called to respond to a head-on crash involving a semi and an SUV on State Route 4 and State Route 56, according to a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office.

Upon arrival, it was determined the semi was heading southbound on SR-4 at SR-56 when the SUV heading northbound on SR-4 crossed the center line and crashed head-on into the semi, the sheriff’s office said.

CareFlight was called to the scene and assisted with life-saving measures.

The driver of the SUV, identified as 30-year-old Douglas C. Schilling, was pronounced deceased at the scene, according the the sheriff’s office.

The driver of the semi was not injured.

The crash remains under investigation at this time.
