MIAMI TWP. — A loud “pop” sound in the Dayton Mall parking lot on Saturday afternoon set off panic and led to numerous calls to police about a possible shooting.

“There was no shooter. There was no injury to anyone,” Pat McCoy, public information officer for the Miami Twp. Police Department said.

The panic happened on Super Saturday, the last Saturday before Christmas and one of the busiest shopping days of the year.

Around 3 p.m., McCoy said police began receiving calls about a fight, but it was not clear whether it was inside or outside the mall, nor how many people were involved, he said.

As police officers arrived to assist officers already at the more, someone reported hearing gunfire.

However, the noise was caused by something other than a gun.

“A car ran over a pop bottle, a plastic bottle,” McCoy said.

Police were not able to find anyone involved in a fight, and there were no victims or anyone injured.

“The mall is safe and it’s open,” McCoy said.
