Champaign County shooting investigated as attempted murder-suicide

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY — UPDATE @ 11:21 a.m. (Jan. 2):

Champaign County deputies are investigating the shooting on Loveless Road New Year’s Eve as an attempted murder-suicide, according to a sheriff’s office report.

According to the report, Joe Hooper, 51, shot Pamelia Hooper, 48, before killing himself.

Two guns were recovered from the scene, the report indicated.

Pamelia Hooper was in intensive care at Miami Valley Hospital on New Year’s Day at last check, Sheriff Matt Melvin said.

UPDATE @ 8:06 p.m. (Dec. 31):

Champaign County Sheriff Matt Melvin identified the man killed in the shooting as Joe Hooper, 51.  The woman injured in the shooting was Pamelia Hooper, 48, and she was taken to Miami Valley Hospital.

UPDATE @ 5 p.m. 

Investigators said additional details about a fatal shooting in Champaign County will not be released on scene, but an update is expected later tonight.

One person was killed and a second person suffered critical injuries in what was described as an active shooter situation around 1:40 p.m. Sunday at a home in the 9800 block of Loveless Road.

It is not known if one of the people shot was the suspected shooter, or if investigators were looking for a suspect.

UPDATE: @3:55 p.m. 

One person is dead and a second person suffered critical injuries during an active shooter situation in Champaign County Sunday.

The second victim was transported to Miami Valley Hospital by a CareFlight medical helicopter and is in critical condition, according to a fire official at the scene.

Additional details, including if investigators have a suspect, were not available.

FIRST REPORT

Two people have suffered gunshot wounds after an active shooter situation south of Mechanicsburg in Champaign County Sunday.

Medics were first dispatched on reports of one victim suffering a gunshot wound in the 9800 block of Loveless Road in Champaign County around 1:40 p.m.

Units on the scene reported an active shooter situation on arrival, according to scanner traffic.

Dispatchers confirmed two people suffered gunshot wounds and the active shooter situation was contained.

A CareFlight medical helicopter was requested to transport both people who were shot.
