#ColdCaseThursday invites public to help close unsolved Montgomery County cases

MONTGOMERY COUNTY — The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is looking for people who they think got away with murder and they’re asking you to help track them down.

Each month, the sheriff’s office focuses on a new cold case as a part of #ColdCaseThursday. Sheriff Rob Streck started the campaign at the beginning of the year as a way to let the community and victims’ families know that their cases hasn’t been forgotten.

“We definitely want to bring some closure to the family and let them know that even though it’s probably been several years, the victim nor the crime has been forgotten,” said Chief Deputy Daryl Wilson.

The department posts on social media about the case and issues a press release on the case in hopes of uncovering new leads.

“We need the community’s help, we know that’s why we’re reaching out,” Wilson said.

In April the sheriff’s office is focusing on the death of 46-year-old Rodney Shephard.

He was found dead in his Brookville home on Jan. 10, 2000, after he didn’t show up for breakfast with a friend and then failed to answer his phone.

Detectives collected potential evidence at the scene and interviewed multiple suspects, but hope that someone will step forward with the missing piece in the investigation.

“When detectives come on the scene we try to collect trace evidence, but we want to be able to trace that back to a particular person,” said Wilson. “So now we’re just trying to find our missing person for that trace evidence to be tracked back to.”

Anyone who has more information on Shephard’s death should call the Special Investigations Unit at 937-224-6499 or the Miami Valley Crime Stoppers at 937-222-STOP (7867).
