Springboro varsity, JV football games against Lebanon cancelled due to COVID-19

SPRINGBORO — Springboro football is looking for a new opponent for its opening week game Friday after a COVID-19 issue involving their scheduled opponents caused varsity and JV games to be cancelled.

“As of now, the Freshman game will be played as scheduled,” Springboro Schools Athletic Director Austin Rhoads said in a tweet. “We are actively looking for an opponent to fill in this Friday.”

In a statement, Lebanon schools said “due to a recent increase in student-athletes unavailable to compete, including one entire position group, Lebanon Football is unable to play Friday night at Springboro.”

The Lebanon Athletic Department said while no players have tested positive, several football players are in quarantine due to contact tracing.

“It is very disappointing that we will not be opening our 2021 season this Friday,” Lebanon schools said in a statement. “Our heart goes out first and foremost to all the Lebanon and Springboro student-athletes who have been through so much since the pandemic began and worked so hard under difficult circumstances to prepare themselves to perform.”

Springboro schools has not yet announced if it will be able to secure a new opponent for this weekend’s games.
