Springfield fire department handles more than 60 calls in frigid temps on Christmas Day

SPRINGFIELD — This Christmas Day the Springfield Fire Department said they handled 30 percent more calls than last year’s holiday.

The fire department’s “C Unit” handled 67 calls that day, including a large house fire in the 1100 block of West High Street in the evening, according to a post by the department on social media.

When crews arrived on the scene they found heavy fire on the first floor traveling up to the second floor.

Crews had to battle fire in temperatures around 11 degrees, according to the social media post.

The house was vacant and the cause remains under investigation.
