A Springfield woman was at a McDonald’s drive-through when she witnessed a shooting, and sprang into action to help save the young victim’s life Wednesday afternoon.

“The young man that fired the gun was probably five feet in front of him and they were arguing. That’s what got our attention,” Starr Huff said. “The next thing I knew the young man shot the gun, shot him in the chest, and then as I jumped out he shot ... two more times at him.”

Huff was at the speaker to order food for her son and herself at the time of the shooting.

The victim ran inside the McDonald’s on East Main Street and Huff went after, telling him he was going to be OK.

“Everything that I learned in nursing went straight into action,” Huff said.

The teen’s fear was palpable, his pupils dilated when he asked Huff to tell his mother and grandmother that he loved them, that he was dying.

“I said ‘you’re not going to die. Not today. You’re not going to die. I’m not going to let you,’” Huff said.

She continued to help him until paramedics arrived and took him to a local hospital.

“The fear on that young man’s face was enough ... was enough for me to do everything that I would ever have to do that I gave my best efforts to save his life,” she said.

Huff denied that she is a hero.

“I just did what I was trained. ... I just did what hopefully any human being would do,” she said.

The victim’s name, age and condition were not available, but he was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Police were looking for at least one suspect, but detectives have not released any information about possible shooters.
