SPRINGFIELD — Students at Springfield High School are voicing their frustration over the dress code for girls.
On Tuesday, a group of about 20 students got up halfway through the last period of the day and walked out.
Brianna Midkiff, Springfield High School Freshman, told News Center 7′s Molly Koweek that teachers use the dress code to punish students for wearing clothing that shows their shoulders or stomachs, that includes wearing spaghetti straps.

“They kind of just look at you, they stare at you like you’re being a distraction even though they’re an adult and they should be keeping their eyes off you in that type of way,” Midkiff said.
In response to Tuesday’s walkout, the Springfield City School District said “Springfield High School encourages students to practice responsible and impactful social advocacy, but discourages any form of protest that may disrupt the educational process.”

The school’s lead principal, Patrick Smith, met with students on Wednesday to discuss their concerns. The principal and students came to an agreement that students will be able to have more of a voice on the issue for the next school year.
