Braedon Norman and Ella Fecher said they were going to take it easy tonight.
“I think we’re just going back to the house, and our family is going to watch the ball drop and then call it a night,” Norman said.
Staying in, Norman said, is part of his tradition.
“Nothing good happens out there. So we try to avoid that. We try to stay safe,” Norman said.
But not everyone’s plans are so tame. Blake Davis was on 5th Street a few hours before Dayton’s celebrations were set to begin.
“I imagine it could be getting a little bit wild down here,” Davis said.
Last year during New Years, the Ohio State Highway Patrol worked seven deadly crashes. After a year with more than 200 OVIs, they’ve decided to have patrols on every major road.
“Citizens are strongly encouraged to utilize resources like Uber and Lyft to avoid making the costly mistake of driving under the influence,” the highway patrol said in a statement to News Center 7.
“If you’re out there, stay safe tonight,” Norman said. “If you need a ride, call somebody. Don’t try to do it on your own and have a happy New Year.”
