TROY — A suspected drug transaction between two women led to one of those women falling off the side of the car as the driver drove off, according to Troy police.

"It was a purchase of illegal narcotics and a disturbance happened between the two and the one got on the vehicle as the other one was driving away,” said Capt. Joe Long with Troy police.  "I believe she felt she was owed some money."

Police said the woman was hanging onto the passenger side of an SUV when she fell off in the area of East Race and South Walnut streets around 2 p.m. Monday.

The woman who fell off the car was identified as Jody Staten, 47, of Troy.  She was flown to Miami Valley Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.  An update on her condition was not able to be released Tuesday morning.

The driver, who has only been identified by police as a woman, left the scene, but came to the Troy police station later in the afternoon to speak with officers, Long said.

The vehicle was traveling at excessive speeds, believed to be up to 50 mph, when Staten fell off the SUV, according to investigators.

“I saw a woman jump on a car and the car sped off. She fell off and she’s bleeding severely from the head,” said a man in a 911 call.

Long said investigators recovered illegal drugs at the scene.

Police said the two women knew each other because they had spent time together in jail previously.

Possible charges are eventually expected to be presented to the Miami County Prosecutor’s Office once they are able to speak to everyone involved in the case, Long said.
