The tip indicated that Stewart Guthrie was residing at the location. He was wanted on a felony warrant for unlawful carrying of a handgun.

Deputies responded and contacted the homeowner. They learned the suspect was possibly armed in the basement.

They tried to negotiate a peaceful surrender with Guthrie, but he was not cooperating, a sheriff’s spokesperson said.

As a precaution, other residents were evacuated from the home, and the Richmond SWAT Team was requested.

After SWAT arrived, further negotiation attempts were made. They found Guthrie in a small basement closet and took him into custody.

“This successful operation highlights the professionalism and determination of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office in ensuring public safety,” said Sheriff Randy Retter. “We are grateful for the assistance provided by the Richmond Police Department to accomplish the safe resolution of this operation.”

No injuries were reported.
