Springfield police working to sort out shooting, stabbing outside business

UPDATE @ 9:48 p.m. (March 2): A man who identified himself as private security who was stabbed outside a Mini-Mart when he tried to break up a fight now is listed as the suspect in a shooting that occurred during the melee outside the same business early Saturday, Springfield police said.

No charges have been filed and the investigation is continuing, according to a police incident report made public Monday, but this is what police learned when they were dispatched to the 900 block of Selma Road just after midnight on the report of a stabbing:

The 37-year-old man who was stabbed told police he was working as private security at the Mini-Mart when he heard "a lot of commotion from the parking lot." He went outside to break up the crowd, he said, when a male he didn't know ran up to him and stabbed him.

The store security man told police he heard at least three gunshots from the parking lot as he ran back to the store.

When police arrived, the store security man was shirtless at the counter and they said they could see several apparent stab wounded on the man's left arm, his back and the back of his neck. The officers administered first aid as medics were en route.

Meantime, the 22-year-old man who was shot told officers his version of what happened, the details of which are not included in the incident report narrative. The gunshot shattered the bone in his lower left leg, police said.

Both men were taken to Springfield Regional Medical Center.

According to the incident report, the incidents are being investigated as an assault with deadly weapons -- with intent to cause or attempt to cause serious harm.
