Father and son charged in shooting death of 2-year-old in Harrison Twp.

HARRISON TWP. — UPDATE @ 4:30 p.m. (June 13):

A man and his 13-year-old son will be charged in connection to the shooting death of the man’s other son, 2-year-old Jvontae Johnston in Harrison Twp.

The 13-year-old was playing with his father’s loaded firearm he found under the kitchen sink on June 4 when he discharged the weapon, striking and killing his younger brother, according to the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office.

The teen will be charged with one count of reckless homicide with a firearm specification. Due to his age, he cannot be tried as an adult, prosecutors said.

Jamahl N. Evans, the father of both boys, will be charged with involuntary manslaughter, endangering children, possession drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana and 10 counts of having weapons under disability.

“The adult defendant has a lengthy criminal record, including one prior conviction of an offense of violence and four prior convictions for drug offenses,” according to the release from the prosecutor’s office.

The shooting happened around 4 p.m. June 4 inside a home in the 2500 block of Wheeler Avenue in Harrison Twp.

At the time of the shooting, Evans was on probation for attempted felonious assault, possession of cocaine and having weapons under disability.

The teen appeared in front of Judge Anthony Capizzi on charges of reckless homicide. He will be released from juvenile detention to his grandmother later in the day, but will be subject to electronic home monitoring.

The case will be reviewed by a prosecutor’s office panel later in the week.

Johnston’s father, Jamahl Evans is facing federal charges after he was arrested in the hours after the shooting.
