Police previously told News Center 7 that the teen stole someone’s car and drove away before crashing. They said during the theft, someone fired shots, hitting the suspect.

After crashing, the teen took off running. He later arrived home and was taken to the hospital.

Police also confirmed that the teen had been under electronic home monitoring at the time of the theft and shooting. He had cut off his ankle bracelet before stealing the car.

As reported on News Center 7 at 5:30, Montgomery County Juvenile Court Administrator Eric Shafer said technology for ankle bracelets used for home monitoring has improved dramatically.

“If they are allowed to go to school, that is a variance built into the computer so that they know when they’re traveling to school,” Shafer said.

At any one time, 30 to 40 tens are on electronic home monitoring in Montgomery County. Each of the last three years, the project averaged about 600 juveniles a year on the monitoring.

Since this teen cut off his ankle monitor, he could be facing even more trouble.

“There is a violation of a court order that would be dealt with the magistrate or judge down the road,” Shafer said. “And many times there is a criminal damaging offense because they’ve damaged public property.”
