Teen LGBTQIA+ community is invited to Dayton Library for mental health education and support

Lavi Darling, 26 of Bloomfield sits on a giant rainbow flag in support of the LGBT community who had gathered on Liberty Avenue to watch the historic Supreme Court ruling on Prop 8 and DOMA live, Wednesday. The court's ruling in favor of gay marriage was cause for celebration at the rally.

DAYTON — Teens self-identifying as LGBTQIA+ can attend mental health education sessions at Dayton Metro Library throughout November.

Montgomery County Alcohol, Drug, Addiction, and Mental Health Services (ADAMHS) Prevention Specialist will lead the Visible and Resilient Teen Engagement program.

The discussions will focus on supporting and improving mental health, a spokesperson stated in a press release.

This service benefits a community that disproportionately suffers higher rates of mental health disorders, substance misuse, and suicidal attempts, according to American Psychiatric Association.

ABC News reported that LGBTQ members, especially the trans community, experience more violence, even death, than their cisgender, straight counterparts.
