Second Chance: Humane Society finds home for inseparable steers

DAYTON — Earlier this month the Humane Society of Greater Dayton was asking for help finding a home for two steers that were rescued from a home where they were neglected.

The humane society announced on social media that the two have been adopted and are now together on a farm surrounded by other cows.

“They are together, but have a second chance now,” the organization said on social media.

The two brothers, Cocoa and Marvin, have not had a lot of human interaction and have had to rely a lot on one another.

“They are truly inseparable,” the animal shelter said.

The Humane Society said that Marvin, the red steer, is very attached to Cocoa and becomes very stressed when he isn’t near.

“With the steers being between 8 and 12 years old and so bonded, we don’t want to break them up, but we instead want to find a safe haven for them,” the Humane Society said.

It was discovered that Cocoa had a condition known as “lumpy jaw” that would eventually make it impossible for him to eat.

The Humane Society said it doesn’t know how long Cocoa has until his lumpy jaw becomes unmanageable, but they want to keep the brothers together as long as possible.

“Their bond is so strong and the love they have for one another is indescribable. We want to do what we can to make the rest of their lives together as stress-free and filled with love as is possible,” said Brian Weltge, President & CEO of the Humane Society of Greater Dayton.

They also said that four goats from the same cruelty and neglect investigation also found their forever home.
