‘They shot it up,’ 911 callers describe chaos after 2 killed while stopped at a red light in Dayton

DAYTON — Dayton Police are working to identify a shooter that opened fire on a minivan stopped at a stop light, killing two people who were inside it.

“As soon as the light turned red they shot it up and they pulled off,” a 911 caller told dispatchers. “They just shot up the car.”

The 911 caller said she was on her way home from visiting a club, when she pulled up to the intersection of Gettysburg Avenue and Germantown Street around 1 a.m. Sunday.

“Somebody just shot at a car while they was at the stop light at Gettysburg and Germantown,” the caller said. “It was probably about 10 shots...and they just pulled off.”

Dayton officers arrived to find Leasha Owens, 24, of Dayton, and Turell Justice, 35, of Dayton, suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were taken to Miami Valley Hospital, where they died from their injuries, according to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office. Owens was shot multiple times and Justice was shot once in the chest. Both of their deaths were ruled homicides.

The 911 caller said the vehicle that had someone firing from it was dark red and possibly a Chevrolet Impala or Pontiac Grand Prix. Police said they don’t have any information on a potential shooter at this point.

News Center 7 crews spotted at least 22 evidence markers in the roadway after police taped off the intersection to conduct their investigation.

A witness said her cousins went over to help the victims, but once the witness got over to the minivan she said both victims appeared to not be breathing.

“I just watched this girl take her last breath,” the 911 caller said.
