COLUMBUS — Over 100,000 Ohioans will be receiving checks in the mail starting next week thanks to a multistate settlement.

The checks are the result of a $141 million settlement with Intuit, the owner of TurboTax. As part of the settlement, $5.3 million will be paid to 174,000 Ohioans.

Nationwide, 4.4. million people were fooled by Intuit.

“The checks are in the mail – or will be soon,” Yost said. “I’m beyond thrilled that cheated Ohioans will see money go back into their pockets after Intuit’s shameless scheme.”

Intuit became the focus of an investigation after a nonprofit newsroom, ProPublica, reported the company was using deceptive digital tactics to trick low-income customers into using its paid products instead of the federally supported and free tax services.

Those eligible for the settlement money are consumers who paid to file federal tax returns through TurboTax for tax years: 2016, 2017 and 2018, but were eligible for free filings. Rust Consulting, the settlement fund administrator, is contacting those individuals via email.

All checks are expected to be mailed by the end of the month.
