MIAMI VALLEY — When online shopping increases, big shipping companies see a jump in the number of packages thieves steal. The United States Post Office is telling customers to be careful if they are shopping online.
While online shopping can be convenient, the packages sitting outside your front door could attract porch pirates in the Miami Valley.
On Wednesday, News Center 7 reported that Kettering police were searching for a man and woman who were caught on a doorbell camera stealing packages from the apartment complex on Sheringham Court.
Ryhs Powell, of Kettering, said hearing about the porch pirates does worry him, considered himself lucky to work from home, along with his partner.
“We are generally watching the packages get carried to our door when we’re expecting something,” Powell said.
An Amazon spokesperson told News Center 7 that most of its deliveries make it to their customers with no problem.
The United States Post Office recommended people ship their online orders to where they work. Also, people could request a signature service or to have the package held at your local post office.

The Better Business Bureau has seven steps to help stop porch pirates:
- Do not leave delivered packages unattended.
- Take advantage of online tracking services offered by retailers.
- Consider monitoring the front door.
- Customize the delivery.
- Secure the shipment.
- Talk to employers.
- Watch for suspicious activity.
If you have had a package stolen, call the police so they can look into a potential pattern of crime. Additionally, make sure to call the company you bought the item through.
