Trotwood Fire Department awarded Homeland Security grant

The City of Trotwood will be the recipient of a special grant through the Department of Homeland Security to help keep firefighters and the public they serve safer.

The city will receive the award through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. The purpose of the program is "to protect the health and safety of the public and firefighting personnel against fire and fire-related hazards," city officials said.

The grant request was specifically for EMS ambulance power lift cots, which totaled over $200,000. The city will be responsible for 10 percent of the total award.

According to Fire Chief Rick Haacke, "Our Deputy Fire Chief Brandon Barnett was responsible for writing the grant for this award and we both recognized the need for this equipment."

Fire department officials said the award will give fire and rescue first responders the ability to help reduce work-related injuries while providing the best service for citizens.
