TROY — The Troy Aquatic Park is set to open today, but the reopening won’t be without certain modifications due to COVID-19, announced the Troy Recreation Board after a monthly meeting in May.

State of Ohio guidelines regarding limited maximum capacity are changing the aquatic park’s pass holder system.

Anyone who purchased passes for the 2020 season will be receiving a full refund unless they have contacted the Recreation Department to apply their money to their 2021 passes.

Lindsy Fischer and her son are among those that frequent the city’s pool. She said typically they have season passes but still plan to come several times a week.

“I think we were like the third car in the parking lot,” Fischer said. “We love swimming, we love coming to the pool and we wanted to be here on opening day."

Swimmers will be able to use the diving board, but in an effort to follow distancing requirements the slides and play structure will not be open, the board said.

The park is implementing additional modifications to comply with the state’s reopening guidelines.

"The Mayor and the Troy recreation board were really behind wanting to have an opportunity for our citizens to have something to do and they really feel like this is a big part of the community," Ken Siler, Troy’s Director of Recreation, said.

The maximum capacity for the pool will be 190 which is a stark contrast from the number of people typical at the Aquatic Center. Siler estimates on the busiest days they have 1200 to 1300 people at the pool and average about 430-450 in a given day.

Fischer said she thinks everything will go well but admits it may take some planning ahead on warmer days that might be busier.

Those who plan to enjoy the park during the season before it ends Aug. 16 should note the following changes:

· Concessions offerings will be modified. As always, carry in food and beverage will be permitted. (No Glass)

· No lounge chairs will be provided by the Troy Aquatic Park. Patrons will be permitted to bring their own.
