Troy Schools students, parents forced to temporarily shelter in place due to tornado warning

TROY — Students and parents were forced to temporarily shelter in place in all Troy School buildings after a tornado warning was issued in Miami County Wednesday afternoon.

The tornado warning was declared near the time the district was dismissing students from its six elementary schools.

“We immediately had our students shelter in place and did not release them from school in order to keep them safe during the warning,” Troy City Schools Superintendent, Chris Piper, said social media post.

Soon after, the tornado warning was lifted, but as school leaders were preparing to dismiss students, a second tornado warning was issued.

“We continued to have the children shelter in place until the second warning was lifted. The students were dismissed as soon as it was safe to do so,” Piper said.

The tornado warning has been lifted, and at 4:15 p.m. the school district began dismissing all students who had been sheltering in place.

The tornado sirens in Troy were activated four times between 3:30 p.m. and 4:15 p.m.

“I think our kids and parents did a really nice job of following the safety directions and protocols. It’s clear they’ve been practicing at some point,” said Dr. Michael Moore, Assistant Supt. for Troy City Schools. “I’m glad everyone is okay and nothing worse happened.”
